Study Permits

A study permit is a document issued by the Canadian government that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. DLIs are institutions approved by the government to host international students.

Who Needs a Study Permit?

International students who plan to study in Canada for more than six months are required to obtain a study permit. However, if your program of study is less than six months, you do not need a study permit. However, it is still advisable to apply for a study permit as it allows you to work while you study.

How to Apply for a Study Permit?

The first step in applying for a study permit is to obtain an acceptance letter from a DLI. Once you have received an acceptance letter, you can proceed to apply for a study permit. The application process can be done online.

Processing Time for Study Permit Applications

The processing time for study permit applications varies depending on the country of origin. In general, the processing time can take several weeks. However, it is advisable to apply well in advance to avoid any delays.

Extending Your Study Permit

If you wish to extend your stay in Canada as a student, you must apply for an extension before your current study permit expires. To be eligible for an extension, you must still be enrolled in a program of study at a DLI.
